Sketching is a beautiful way to bring out your thoughts on paper. Sketching is like poetry on paper, the code that only a few can decode. It is quite relaxing to play with shades through pencil and rubber. What is Sketching?
Sketching is a quickly made rough drawing with fewer details. Its purpose is to record the mood, object, imaginary scene, dream, or fantasy that artists capture in its mind. It is the first step to create the work on mediums like canvas, board, wall e.t.c. Many trained artists pursue it without sketching, however, that too needs a lot of practice. The main key behind creating the sketch is to play with the strokes and shades. Strokes give the basic texture to your sketch whereas shades including highlights, mid-tones, and shadows are responsible for creating 3d and 2d designs. Consider strokes as the backbone of the sketching that brings out the main image. Here I am gonna give you a precise overview of all types of strokes. Strokes make Sketching look beautiful and innovative. Every technique works with a different form of art to discover a unique work. Moreover, to maintain clarity and objectivity one needs to understand the demand of the image and the value of strokes that varies from dark tones to lighter tones. Briefly, I am gonna mention 6 different types of strokes and direct you to a quick guide.
Hatching: Hatching is among the basic methods of sketching. It is quite tricky and needs layers of lines to bring out the difference between depth and surface.
Step 1- Take out your pencil/pen and start drawing lines. Try to do it continuously to maintain a flow. The lines must follow the same direction(left to right/ right to left)
Step 2- Once done, try to make smaller lines over the last ones. The darker side will show a variation in shade accordingly.
Step 3- Continue to process by decreasing the size of lines after every sequence.
Cross Hatching: Cross Hatching is more like hatching lines drawn in a zigzag pattern. Use a sharpened pencil for finer edges and a blunt for soft edges. The space between individual lines works as the shade. Try keeping the strokes lighter if you want to show the lighter value. Meanwhile, for the darker value, draw lines closer together, with heavier pressure and less white space.
Contour Drawing: Contour drawing is one of the most important techniques used by artists to bring out the effects and realism in the image. Unlike hatching and cross-hatching, contouring goes with the flow of drawing. It includes curves and variations of lines. It deviates with the flow when needed.
Below is the basic structure to understand the different forms of contouring:
Stippling: This form of art includes dots to build up a sketch. You must be wondering how a sketch can be drawn only through the dots. Well, it’s all the magic of density. All the above forms of sketches used lines to sketch while the technique of stripping uses dots as its weapon. Just like a mandala, people find dots in stippling quite relaxing and helps to maintain focus.
Step 1– Draw the basic structure of what you are going to draw. Keep in mind the line should be light.
Step 2– Starting putting dots with the help of a fine edge pencil.
The space between dots should be maintained according to the tone. Dark tones would need less space and, more dots whereas lighter tones will need more space and fewer dots. The mid-tone would be the average of both according to the variation of shades.
Step 3– Finalize your sketch by drawing the final outlines.
Scribbling: Scribbling provides effective strokes for specific objects like trees, hair. In the darker areas, use more dense and small strokes whereas for creating lighter and mid-tones use bigger and less dense strokes, To blend and maintain the density one can also you the background shade.
Circulism: Circulism is mostly used to bring realism to the sketches. Mostly this technique is used to make skin textures. The process needs a lot of patience and presence of mind. To maintain the flow and merge the strokes, overlapping of circles is mandatory. Here are a few steps to guide you through that.
Step 1– Same as above, draw a rough and light outline of the image to be drawn.
Step 2– Start Rotating your pencil in a small circular flow or half-circular motion.
Step 3– The darker area might need a layer of shades.
Step 4– End your sketch with the final outline.
To start practising all these strokes, select a particular shape like a triangle, rectangle, or circle. Draw them and fill them with strokes as referenced below. Practice it on different shapes to learn the flow and density values.
